MOQ tiers in 2026
The number you've heard quoted by Alibaba storefronts — "MOQ 100 pieces" — is almost never real. It's a lead-magnet number designed to get you into a sales conversation. The actual MOQ that produces a credibly priced quote from a real mill in 2026 is:
- 500 pieces per design / color / size for picnic blankets with single-color embroidery or screen print. This is the FIELDLOOM standard and most mid-tier Zhejiang mills.
- 300 pieces in rare cases where the customer accepts higher unit cost (~25% premium) and stock color fabric.
- 1,000 pieces for jacquard-woven patterns (loom card setup cost has to be amortized).
- 2,000+ pieces for custom-dyed Pantone color runs.
Indicative unit costs (FOB Ningbo, 2026)
Pricing varies dramatically with quantity, fabric spec and decoration. Below is what we typically see at the 1,000-piece order tier:
- Picnic blanket, 145×180 cm, 280 GSM polar fleece face + PEVA backing, embroidered logo: USD 5.20–7.80 / piece
- Same as above but with TPU backing: USD 7.50–10.20 / piece (TPU is recyclable, more durable)
- Sand-free beach mat, 180×200 cm, 210T ripstop nylon, sublimation print + corner anchors: USD 4.80–6.50 / piece
- Camping ground mat, 200×250 cm, 600D Oxford + 5mm foam, screen-printed logo: USD 9.20–13.80 / piece
- Fleece throw blanket, 130×160 cm, 280 GSM coral fleece, embroidered corner: USD 3.80–5.20 / piece
At 5,000 pieces, expect 15–25% lower. At 20,000+, expect 35% lower with stock-color fabric. These numbers exclude shipping (sea freight typically adds USD 0.30–0.80 / piece depending on destination).
Lead times (2026)
Standard lead times we run currently:
- Sample (free unbranded fabric swatches): 2–3 days
- Custom logo proof sample: 7–14 days
- Bulk production after sample approval: 25–45 days depending on technique
- Ocean freight to US/EU/UK ports: 18–35 days
- Air freight: 4–7 days (cost: ~USD 8–14/kg vs USD 0.30–0.50/kg sea)
Where mills cut corners (watch out)
The three places to push back when comparing quotes:
- Backing lamination method. Heat-bonded with a stabilizing scrim is the gold standard. Glue lamination is cheaper but peels after the first wash. Ask the spec sheet.
- Fleece GSM consistency. Some mills will quote 280 GSM, ship 240. Ask for a fabric weight test report on bulk delivery.
- Embroidery thread density. Cheaper embroidery uses fewer stitches per mm and looks loose. Ask for stitch-density spec.
Real budget benchmarks
If you're targeting a US retail price of USD 39–49 for a private-label picnic blanket, your landed cost (including shipping, duty, packaging) needs to be under USD 9. That maps to roughly USD 7.50 FOB Ningbo, which is achievable at 2,000+ piece quantity with PEVA backing and embroidered logo. For TPU backing, target retail USD 49–59.
