Four fleece blanket fabric samples stacked showing different GSM weights

The four GSM tiers

220 GSM polar fleece — light, thin, packs small. The amenity / promo tier. Suitable for stadium giveaways, airline economy blankets, conference welcome gifts, retail "starter" throws at the USD 19–29 price point. Drapes poorly; reads as inexpensive in hand.

280 GSM coral fleece — the workhorse retail throw weight. Soft pile, good drape, photographs well. Most US/EU retail throw blankets in the USD 29–49 price band sit here. Default choice for vacation rental and Airbnb programs.

320 GSM coral fleece or sherpa — premium retail and boutique hotel. Substantial in hand, holds shape when folded over a sofa arm. The "buy as a gift" weight. Retail USD 49–79.

380 GSM sherpa-lined or wool-blend — luxury home goods and five-star hospitality. Heavy, warming, presents as an heirloom. Retail USD 79–129.

Fleece type at each weight

The fabric type matters as much as the GSM. At 280 GSM, polar fleece feels noticeably thinner and less premium than coral fleece — even at the same weight. The difference is pile structure: coral fleece has a deeper, fluffier surface; polar fleece is flatter.

At 320–380 GSM, the conversation shifts to sherpa (curly faux-shearling) and micromink (silky dense pile). Sherpa is warmer and more textural; micromink is silkier and more visually premium. Many high-end throws are double-faced: sherpa one side, coral fleece or micromink the other.

What channel maps to what weight

The 240 GSM trap

Watch out for quotes that promise "280 GSM" but actually run 240 in production. The customer signs off on a 280 GSM sample, the mill quietly substitutes a lighter fabric in bulk to save 8 cents per piece, and the difference doesn't show until the blankets arrive feeling thinner than the sample. We always recommend requesting a fabric weight test report on bulk delivery — it's a USD 30 test that catches this kind of substitution.

Working on a throw blanket program and not sure which weight fits your channel? Send us your brief — we'll send unbranded swatches in 4–6 weights so you can hand-feel the difference.
