Start with what 200gsm can and cannot do

For airline use, 200gsm recycled fleece is usually chosen because it balances comfort, weight, cost and carton efficiency. It is not a heavy hotel blanket, and it should not be judged like one. It is a compact cabin blanket for economy, premium economy, charter, rail, cruise or travel amenity kits where consistency matters more than plush excess.

Most airline fleece blankets in this class use polyester because it dries quickly, packs efficiently and gives a soft touch at a controlled cost. Recycled polyester is typically made from post-consumer PET bottle flake or recycled polyester feedstock, but the buyer should ask the supplier to declare the source and documentation available for the yarn or fabric.

Do not assume that the word “recycled” automatically includes a specific certification, chain-of-custody system or percentage. If your airline, concessionaire or brand owner requires certified recycled content, name the exact standard at the quotation stage and check whether the factory can support it for your colour, yarn count and order quantity. If certification is not required, you can still specify recycled polyester content and request supplier traceability documents, but those documents are not the same as a third-party certificate.

For cabin comfort, surface finish matters. A 200gsm fleece may be one-side brushed, two-side brushed, or brushed and sheared depending on the mill setup. Two-side brushed fleece feels warmer and softer, while a more compact finish may shed less lint and fold flatter. Lock size, edge finish and colour before sampling

A typical travel blanket size may sit around the compact airline range rather than household throw dimensions. Instead of copying a catalogue size, start from the seat class, folded pack size, passenger coverage target and service model. A few centimetres in length or width can change carton count, unit weight and fabric yield across a large program.

The edge finish should be written into the specification, not left to the sample room. Common choices include overlock stitching, folded hem, blanket stitch, or binding tape. Overlock is efficient and light; folded hems look cleaner but use more fabric and labour; binding gives a more structured edge but can affect softness and packing thickness. Stitch density, thread colour and corner handling should be approved on a pre-production sample.

Colour also needs practical control. Airline navy, charcoal, grey and beige shades are common because they hide handling marks better than pale colours. For recycled polyester, some colours are easier to stabilise than others, especially when matching an airline brand palette. If colour is critical, specify a physical colour standard, light source for approval, and acceptable shade band. Do not rely only on screen references or a verbal colour name.

If the blanket carries a logo, confirm the decoration method early. Embroidery adds perceived value but also weight, stiffness and cost. Specify packing for aircraft handling, not only presentation

Airline amenity blankets are handled through factory packing, export cartons, warehouse storage, catering logistics and onboard distribution. The packing specification should therefore cover fold method, individual bag type, master carton quantity, carton dimensions, carton weight target, carton markings and whether the blanket must be compressed.

Individual packaging can be a clear polybag, paper band, recycled-content bag, belly band, or no individual bag depending on the airline’s hygiene and waste policy. A polybag protects the fleece from moisture and dust, but it creates more cabin waste. A paper band reduces plastic use but gives less protection during long storage or humid transport. The right choice depends on the service model and the destination climate.

For a 200gsm blanket, folded thickness is as important as fabric weight. Two blankets with the same GSM can pack differently because of brushing, edge finish and size. Ask the factory to provide sample packed dimensions and carton loading data from the approved sample, not just from an old production style. Build QC points into the purchase order

A useful blanket specification becomes a working QC document. For airline programs, consistency across cartons is often more important than one perfect showroom sample. Common checks may include colour fastness, dimensional change after washing if the blanket is reusable, fibre content, restricted substance screening, and basic flammability evaluation where required by destination rules or airline policy. If the blanket is intended for laundering and reuse, washing instructions must be realistic. Recycled polyester fleece can perform well, but brushing, stitching and labels all need to survive the expected care cycle. If it is intended for limited use or passenger take-away, the care label may be simpler, but fibre content and origin marking still need to follow the buyer’s market rules.

Ask supplier questions that reveal production reality

Before placing a bulk airline order, ask how the supplier controls fleece production from fabric to finished blanket. A trading quote may list the same GSM and size as a mill quote, but the risk profile can be different.
